Why I write on Medium

It is not for money or curation

The subtitle above might throw some people for a loop. Why the hell would someone publish stories on a public writing site with no real intention of making money and not really caring if a story is ever curated by the editors?

Okay, just to clarify — making some extra money is always nice and being curated would be pretty cool. However, neither of them are the primary motivators for me.

Why do I write?

I have always enjoyed expressing myself through the written word. Growing up rather shy and introverted, I needed an outlet, and writing seemed to help. I always got good grades in English composition classes and other writing assignments. If my high school and college exams had all been essay tests instead of multiple choice, I might have graduated with high honors.

Why do I write on Medium?

After years of journaling and writing only for myself, I decided to see what others thought about my stories and observations. It was a big step for a former shy kid and present-day introvert.

There are no regrets. The unexpected outcome was getting to know many amazing people who I never would have otherwise made contact with. It is as if we were sitting down together over a coffee or a beer.
