When you have nothing to write…
…just write!
It is a cold winter day in the upper Midwest (United States). I finished my Saturday household tasks. The house is quiet — a perfect time to sit down at the keyboard and write. A few ideas were swirling around in my head that I was hoping would turn into a good Medium story to publish.
While my laptop was booting up, I looked forward to those creative thoughts transferring from my brain through my fingers to the screen. I started with a few ideas in my Drafts folder, hoping those topics would gel and the words would formulate into something tangible.
But then random, stupid-looking sentences appeared in front of me that seemed to sway from the original intent of the story. I backspaced over them and thought some more. I typed a few more sentences and then got caught up in punctuation and grammar, trying to make the sentence look perfect. I realized my obsession with sentence structure was not only interfering with my writing, it was a sign I was struggling with the content. In other words, I didn’t seem to be feeling it today.
Brain freeze. Writer’s block. Whatever you choose to call it, that was what happened.
I got increasingly frustrated over my failure to come up with a good story, at least good enough in my eyes. So, I shut down my laptop and considered other…
