To my 14-year-old self

You are going to be fine

Dear Steve:

Hey buddy. It’s your older self. I am so happy to have the chance to talk to you. It is a confusing time for you. It feels like you’re the only one your age who feels out of touch and insecure.

Believe it or not, that makes you a normal teenager.

I never had anyone to give me worthwhile advice at your age. That’s why your older self is here. If we could meet each other in person, I would give you a massive bear hug, wipe away any tears — and just listen.

I know you have so much to say, but always feel like others shut you down. It seems like no one takes you seriously. You feel like an afterthought. Others just see you as this quiet, skinny kid with nothing meaningful to contribute to the world.

Steve, those people could not be more wrong. I know how much you observe others with bemusement. I know how many hours you spend thinking, day-dreaming, and contemplating life’s complexities. I know what a good head you have on your shoulders. I know what a good heart lies within your skinny chest. I know you have a good sense of right and wrong. Believe me, I know.

I also know you are a terrific kid. The world just hasn’t had a chance to see it yet.
