Take a break from writing
And stop feeling guilty about it
This is my first published Medium story in almost a month. To most other writers, that is practically an eternity.
Why so long between stories? Frankly, the creative juices haven’t been flowing much lately.
I can usually take a small event or observation, connect it to a key point, and poof!— it becomes a Medium story.
Those small events and observations still occurred over the past month, but my brain just couldn’t get those thoughts to form a story around it.
Is that a bad thing? Some might thing so. To me, not at all. The bottom line is I just needed to step away for a while.
Some people think if they do not publish a story every day, they will lose their edge. My feeling is that, no matter how much you enjoy something, you just need a break from it every so often.
During my hiatus, I still opened Medium almost every day and read, clapped, and commented on the great stories from other writers. I tried hard to keep up with my favorite authors, and they did not disappoint.
But I just didn’t feel compelled to compose my own story. At first, I wondered if there was something wrong with that, but soon realized there is nothing wrong with that.
