It is the height of summer. A heat wave hit the upper Midwest the past week. Temperatures averaged in the upper 80’s to mid-90’s. The warmer weather makes people feel lethargic and unmotivated. Very few people were out and about — most were staying inside. The streets and local walking trails were almost vacant.

And me?

I thought it was a great day to take a bike ride. The sun was shining and a warm, gentle breeze was in the air. Staying indoors on a sunny summer day just seemed so “un-summer-like”.

To be clear, I do not advocate taking unnecessary risks in excessive heat. Everyone must pay close attention to what their body can safely tolerate in various weather conditions.

After promising myself to listen to my body and not over-do it, I slipped on a pair of shorts and a light t-shirt, slathered on a generous layer of sunscreen, and walked into the garage to retrieve my bike.

My pores screamed as they had to quickly adjust from a comfortable air conditioned house to an instantaneous 98 degree heat index. There was zero air movement in the garage. I quickly got my bike and wheeled it outside. After checking the tire pressure and securing my helmet, I prayed my crazy self would survive this…
