What does it take to be change-adept?

It is more than just the rake

It has been a long hard winter here in the upper Midwest (United States). We are anxiously awaiting spring time. The snow will be melted, the weather will be warmer, the birds will be singing, and for homeowners like me — yard work awaits.

One of my annual spring chores is raking the yard. It is always good to sweep up the dead grass and debris to perk up the lawn before the new grass sprouts.

I hate it.

Dragging a yard utensil on a wooden stick across a half-acre lot is about as fun as a trip to the dentist and as exciting as reading a phone book.

So, what motivates me to grab that &#%!@?! rake from the garage every year, when there are a thousand other things I would rather be doing? More on that in a bit . . .

A few years ago, I conducted an assessment at my workplace. We had the opportunity to interview employees who were identified by their manager as being exceptional at adapting to business changes. Our objective was to tap into their strengths to help others across the organization increase their change competency. In today’s constantly-evolving business landscape, being change-adept is more important than ever for employees on all levels of hierarchy.
